Since 1995, April has been recognized internationally as Records and Information Management Month! It’s a time to highlight the important impact that good records and information management has on business, and promote the industry. To all of our colleagues and friends in the industry, Adlib salutes you! I hope you take some time to celebrate your accomplishments (with a tall glass of something you love)! The RIM initiative was developed by ARMA International, and we’re thrilled that there is an entire month to celebrate our industry’s accomplishments!

Understanding the impact of records and information management

Everyone, no matter which industry you work in, is inundated with information today. Content guides our day-to-day lives, from the office to home and back again. Millions of emails, tweets, advertisements, white papers, brochures and spreadsheets are created on an hourly basis. Keeping up with the sheer number of file formats alone is a daunting task. In addition, when organizations look at records management, locking down the ever-increasing systems of engagement for more formal, long-term access and archiving is challenging.

Expertly managing the records and information in an organization can be the difference between a successful company and one that is just managing to keep its head above water. Making content shareable and searchable for litigation purposes, assembling multiple documents into sales proposals, or even sharing CAD files with clients are mission critical, but often overlooked business requirements. These challenges can be greatly improved using software tools to standardize the file types (for more information on supporting software, check out the recent Adlib white paper, The Fundamentals of Content Rendering, to learn more about the differences between basic and Advanced Rendering). However, Records and Information Management Month is a chance to acknowledge the complex web of tools, strategies, and methods – not to mention project management and organizational change – that is truly required for effective Records or Information Management programs.
