Adlib Announces Support for XPS

Adlib Announces Support for the new Microsoft XML Paper Specification (XPS) with the Release of Express Server 4.0 Document Transformation and Publishing.

Burlington, Ontario, July 3, 2007 — Adlib Software, a leader in advanced server-based document transformation and publishing, has announced support for XPS – a new electronic document format established by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) – as of Express Server Release 4.0.

For nearly ten years, Adlib Software has been considered a global leader in electronic document conversion and publishing. Adlib’s focus is their Document Transformation Framework (DTF); a modular architecture consisting of Express Server, the core transformation engine, a load-balancing job manager known as Exponent and a series of Add-On modules that provide further publication and transformation features. The culmination of these components and the underlying Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a software system that can be completely tailored to meet the needs of virtually any document workflow – simple or complex, large or small, automated or ad hoc.

In announcing the addition of XPS as a strategic extension of the already impressive list of supported conversion formats, Peter Duff, one of Adlib Software’s co-founders said, “Adobe’s PDF format has clearly been the catalyst for our business model. The majority of our customers convert any number of over 300 file types to PDF or repurpose PDFs to other file types such as HTML, Word and Image files as part of their document workflow processes”. Duff continued, “However, with the introduction of the XPS file type, I think we are going to see more and more customers using XPS as an alternative to PDF.

One of the reasons for Duff’s comments is the ease in which XPS files can be created, exchanged and viewed. Marcio Mello XPS lead program manager at Microsoft, explains. “XPS describes electronic paper in a way that can be read by hardware, read by software, and read by humans. With XPS, documents print better, can be shared easier, be archived with confidence, and are more secure”. Anyone using Windows Vista has the ability to create and view an XPS document. No other software is required. Windows XP users can also create and view an XPS document by installing the Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 or the XPS Essentials Pack. “We are pleased to see that the XPS format is being so readily adopted and Adlib’s commitment to offering XPS support is further confirmation that XPS is a great format for  a variety of electronic document workflows scenarios”, continued Mello.

In addition to providing support for converting other document and image file types to XPS, Adlib Software offers the ability to transform documents by automatically merging and splitting documents, adding intelligent bookmarks, headers, footers, watermarks, page numbers and several other definable parameters. “We offer a highly scalable solution”, said Cameron Bramwell, Adlib President, “allowing the DTF to be adopted into a single department workflow or integrated into a server farm capable of addressing the needs of an enterprise-wide content management infrastructure”. Bramwell went on to say, “Our relationship with other software vendors who have embedded our technology into their own dictates that we keep our finger on the pulse of the newest technologies; screening out fads from trends. XPS is clearly a trend that is gaining momentum in our space”.
