Application Development Partner
Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) or developers that require the integration of Adlib products with their own products and solutions.
Barcode
A code consisting of a group of printed and variously patterned bars and spaces and sometimes numerals that is designed to be scanned and read into computer memory as identification for the object it labels. More information
Bates Numbering
A system that the legal industry uses to refer to evidentiary documents by number rather than name. The Bates number is normally a series of letters followed by sequential numbers.
Branding
User-defined information such as headers, footers and watermarks that are applied to documents. More information
Compound Documents
These are documents assembled from multiple source files, locations and contributors. Using Adlib you can combine multiple files into a single PDF. These documents can also be customized with metadata, headers and footers or watermarks. Custom bookmark structures can be applied as well as a hyperlinked Table of Contents.
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Software used in art, architecture, engineering and manufacturing to assist in precision drawing.
Conversion
Transformation of an electronic file from one file type to another.
DPI (Document Processing Information)
This is an instruction file in Text format (*.dpi extension) that contains pointers to the source files and processing instructions that Express will follow. Job Tickets are created by your workflow (an application or script) and deposited in a folder watched by Express. See also XML Job Ticket.
Extended File Type Support (EFTS)
A rendering module for Express that extends the rendering capability to over 300 file types. This method ensures the highest rendering efficiency without requiring additional software to be installed on the computer performing the conversion. More information
File Type
The kind of data stored in a file that is used to choose an appropriate icon to represent the file in a GUI and the correct application with which to view, edit, run, or print the file.
Grid Computing
Applying the resources of many computers in a network to a single problem at the same time; it mobilizes the unused processing cycles of all computers in the grid for solving problems too intensive for any stand-alone machine.
Hyperlinks
In a document, a hyperlink is a "clickable" reference to another section of the same document or to another document.
Image
The digitized representation of a picture, graphic or document.
Integrated File Type Support (IFTS)
A rendering module for Express used to render Plain (ASCII) Text, Images and HPGL file types. This method ensures the highest rendering accuracy and efficiency for these document types.

Job
A job refers to a collection of instructions and files that is used by Adlib software to execute specific tasks. Examples include conversion of a document to PDF, merging files together, applying watermarks etc. See also Job Ticket, XML Job Ticket and DPI Job Ticket.
Job Ticket
This is an instruction file in XML (*.xml) or Text format (*.dpi extension) that contains pointers to the source files and processing instructions that Express will follow. See also DPI Job Ticket and XML Job Ticket.
Linearization

Merge
Combine multiple documents into a single document. For example merging two 4-page documents will create a single 8-page document.
Metadata
Sometimes described as 'data about data', metadata examples include the properties of documents including Author, Type, Date and any other custom property field. It is also explained as definitional data that provides information about data managed within an application or environment including the context, quality and characteristics of the data.
Native Application
The software application (e.g. Microsoft Excel) that was used to create the file (e.g. xls).
Native Application Support
A rendering module for Express that uses native applications (e.g. Microsoft Excel) to render documents (e.g. xls). This method ensures the highest rendering accuracy and is recommended for complex documents.
OPI (OCR Processing Information)
The OPI is a text based instruction file with a *.opi extension. It contains the configuration settings to perform zonal OCR on a document.
Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
The process of translating image files from the alphabetical characters on the page into the electronic text they represent. OCR virtually eliminates the need for you to re-key the words and sentences embodied in the image. More information
Optimization
Viewing individual PDF pages without downloading the complete PDF file, to allow for fast web viewing. Also known as linearization.

PDF/A
The PDF/A format is an ISO standard for long-term archiving of electronic documents.
PDF/X
PDF/X is an umbrella term for sevral ISO standards that define a subset of the PDF standard. The purpose of PDF/X is to facilitate graphics exchange, and it therefore has a series of printing related requirements, which do not apply to standard PDF files.
Portable Document Format (PDF)
Adobe PDF files preserve the look and integrity of original documents, and can be shared with anyone electronically, regardless of hardware and software platforms.
Record
Information created, received, and maintained as evidence and information by an organization or person, in pursuance of legal obligations or in transaction of business (ISO 15489).
Reseller
A company that distributes or resells a wide array of products to clients; products are sold as is.
Sarbanes Oxley Act
A new set of Federal Regulations that increase the penalties associated with improper corporate governance. These include new standards for records retention, financial reporting and executive accountability.
Split
Divide a document into multiple sections.
Stamp
Add a mark, design, date, watermark or seal to an existing document.
Stitch
Combine individual documents or pages and join them along the edges similar to a 'book' view.
Value Added Reseller (VAR)
A system integrator that offers clients a suite of products and services including consultation, systems integration and training in order to deliver end-to-end solutions.
Watermark
User-defined layer of text that can be applied to documents either in-front of, behind or on the same content layer as the document contents. Watermarks can be positioned anywhere on the pages and there is a choice of font, colour, pattern and orientation. An example would be marking the pages in a document with a 'Confidential' watermark as a layer behind the text.
XML (Extensible Markup Language)
A simple version of SGML that is designed for web documents to enable customized tags and the definition, transmission, validation and interpretation of data between applications and organizations.
XML Job Ticket
This is an instruction file in XML format (*.xml) that contains pointers to the source files and processing instructions that eXpress will follow. Job Tickets are created by your workflow (an application or script) and deposited in a folder watched by eXpress or submitted via Web Service through Exponent. See also DPI Job Ticket.
